AKV Langholt AmbA (Andelskartoffelmelsfabrikken Vendsyssel A.m.b.A) is a Danish potato starch factory situated in Langholt north of Aalborg in the Northern Jutland region of Denmark.
AKV is a co-operative owned by 185 potato farmers, who each have their own individual AKV potato production quota.
AKV’s first plant for processing potatoes to potato starch was built in Dybvad in the foundation year 1933. The present plant in Langholt was built in 1976 and extended in 1990, and today during the potato campaign from late August to December AKV Langholt AmbA in this plant processes about 300,000 tons potatoes grown on approximately 6,500 ha of field. The output is about 60,000-65,000 tons potato starch. Furthermore, AKV has a production of about 3,000 tons of potato protein based on the juice from the potatoes. This product is a.o. sold to producers of mixed feed for mink and piglets. In addition to the above there is a by-production of 36,000 tons potato pulp, which is sold to local farmers as cattle feed.
The main part of AKV’s potato starch is modified in a close co-operation with the American company Cargill, with whom AKV has the 50/50 joint venture Cargill-AKV I/S. This joint venture produces various modified potato starches for the paper industry in a separate plant in Langholt. AKV is responsible for the production and Cargill for the sales and marketing.
The modified starch as well as AKV’s native potato starch and other starches are sold by the international sales organization of Cargill (see adress below). AKV´s potato protein concentrate, potato fibres, and potato juice are sold directly by AKV Langholt.
A major part of the modified starch is sold as binder to paper factories, primarily within the EU. The native starch is sold to a.o. the food industry in Denmark as well as abroad. More than 95% of the total production is exported.
The products are delivered in powder transport trucks, containers, bigbags (typically 1 ton), and 5, 20 and 25 kg plastic bags.
As a service to AKV´s growers AKV offers various types of agricultural services, and also sells high quality seed potatoes including special Dutch types developed especially for starch production. AKV also sells seed potatoes for consumption.
AKV Langholt AmbA/Cargill-AKV I/S are ISO-9001-certified and food safety certified (FSSC 22000), and besides the companies have other relevant certificates and a system for documented environmental control.
The number of employees at AKV is about 55 in the campaign period and about 50 the rest of the year.
